Its difficult not to have heard of Facebook, and just to prove a point here are the latest facts from the social media leaders themselves:

People spend over 700 billion minutes per month on Facebook

With stats like that it is hard to ignore Facebook as a key tool in your social media strategy.

It is a tool for connecting with people and as a business you have the opportunity to engage with customers directly and build your online presence. As a mumpreneur you can harness the power of Facebook to:

Get found by people looking for your products or services
Connect and engage with potential customers
Create a relevant community
Promote new products, special offers or your blog

At Everyday Maternity we have had a Page for a while now - we use it to tell our community when things are back in stock, if we have new arrivals or even if we need an opinion on a new product we are considering.

The first thing you need to do is Create a Page

Pages are your public profiles that users can become a ‘fan’ of and can be created – the only thing you need to invest is your time and effort. It is worth investing some thought into this, as it is really your shop front – choose photos carefully, make sure you can be found with contact numbers and web address and write a small bio to tell people what you are all about.

Once you have set your Page up, you need to promote it.

Ideas to do this are:

Add engaging content – videos, photos, discussion boards. If you provide interesting items....they will come!
Update your Newsfeed – if you provide interesting news, the hope is that your fans will ‘Comment’ or ‘Like’ it. This will then appear in their news feed, and be seen by their friends. Try and do something different, pose an amusing question, or ask your fans to interact by posting photos or videos.
Find some fans – start the ball rolling with your own friends. You need to send them a request, do this by clicking on the Suggest to Friends link.

The good news is that Facebook Pages are indexed by the search engines, so do make sure your keywords are included in your company information. This will help you be found. If you sell breastfeeding clothes in Chester - as we do - then make sure that all those words are in your profile.

Once you have got the hang of everything you can start looking into vanity URLs, Facebook Ads or Applications.

As I mentioned yesterday, I have just come back from the Baby Show where I was giving Cuddledry a hand. It is great to spend the weekend with them, being such nice people, but also it gives me a chance to chat with other people in the industry, swap ideas and even do a bit of brainstorming.

While I'm at the show I get the chance to see what maternity clothes all the lovely pregnant people are wearing, which keeps me in touch with the public. It is necessary to go to the trade shows and see all the new fashions coming through, but it is important to know what real people are wearing. And it would seem that maternity leggings are still a winning choice - but skinny jeans seemed more popular this time.

I had a good chat with Helen, one of the ladies behind Cuddledry and she came up with a great idea for marketing Everyday Maternity at the next show. We need to be able to cut through the leaflet clutter that all the attendees receive, and somehow make the Everyday Maternity leaflet stand-out. I think we will carry on with our VIP cards, but Helen's idea is great to make us stand-out. Obviously I'm not going to tell you what it is, you'll just have to come and buy a Cuddledry Towel at the next Baby Show. The other interesting thing that came out of the show - after too many glasses of wine - is that Polly (the other Cuddledry mastermind) is going to be setting me up on lots of hot dates in Chester! You just never know what to expect from a weekend at the Baby Show!

Just back from an exhausting few days at the Excel Baby Show sponsored by Prima Baby - who we love, especially as we are shortlisted in their Fashion Awards. Very much looking forward to heading up to London for the awards presentation. Fingers crossed, please.

We met some lovely people at the Baby Show - and have some exciting new products to add to the website. The first was Paul from My Buggy Buddy - they have a great little product that allows you to clip your shopping bags to your buggy, or you can lock it to a railing or post, to save your stroller being stolen. We've added them to the site - so you can buy them easily at Everyday Maternity. The Buggy Buddy Clip We are one of the first people to have the new pink and blue varieties.

We did find another great product for your buggies, but the company owners were not very helpful and quiet protective of their product - and wouldn't let us sell it. Their loss we say!

We didn't have our own stand this time, so we gave Cuddledry a hand on their stand. We had a good laugh with them, while working very hard on our product demonstrations. We may have had a few too many glasses of wine at the Organisers Drinks - and had a chat with some lovely other retailers. So we have some new products in the sidelines, that we will tell you about in the coming weeks.

Well today a new delivery arrived from Cuddledry - and I have played a little part in the new packaging - so I can now add consultant to my CV!

I'd forgotten about it to be honest, and it was only once the goods were out of the box, that I noticed that some of them were in new, and very smart reusable bags. Ages ago Helen, one of the founders at Cuddledry, emailed to ask opinions on a new mock up for the packaging.

So being a helpful person, I replied with my thoughts, as they related to merchandising them in a shop, and also with regards to sending them through the post. (being an online company - this is much more important to us).

So it was exciting to see the new packs today, with some of our collective thoughts taken into consideration. The gang at Cuddledry are great - and the Everyday Maternity team regularly go to the Baby Shows with them, to help out on the stand.

I've been searching high and low for a pair of comfortable maternity leggings that are not baggy. I'm so glad I found this one. It's very smooth with good elasticity (does show a little bit "knee marks" but considering it's made with 83% cotton, not bad at all). Very nicely finished. Although a bit pricey for a pair of leggings, I would say it's definitely worth the money as a treat for mums to be.

Plus, the delivery speed is amazing. I received the item on the next day I placed the order. The item arrived in fantastic condition. Will definitely recommend this to others. As a matter of fact, I'm considering to buy another pair...

Computer Envy

Debs has got a new computer today - the old Dell died in suspicious circumstances!

And quite frankly I have computer envy. Big new screen, clean key board, and super fast internet. I keep trying to use the new computer while Debs is making tea!

We have lots of things in the pipeline to tell everyone. Great meeting today with Mama Beach. They are off up to the Scottish Baby Show in Glasgow - 23-25th April at the SECC. They are taking their gorgeous swimwear range to the show and some of the sumptuous lounge wear. Pop by the stand and say hello to Nicki.

We got a mention on a great blog from the other side of the pond this week - www.pregnantfashionista.com They were taken with our maternity treggings from Boob Maternity. Prima Pregnancy and Baby are also going to feature them in next month's magazine.

I'm meeting our HR specialist tomorrow as the team need to know their holiday entitlements now we are in a new tax year. I am useless at fractions of days and working time directives, so I leave that all to Sallie.

We also hope to be adding some more baby items very soon, we are just waiting to hear back on product line-ups and latest collections - so you can shop with Everyday Maternity for even longer.

Maternity Treggings

Great news for all you pregnant ladies who love your skinny jeans. The maternity treggings have arrived.

First we had maternity leggings, then maternity jeggings, and now we have treggings.

And what is the difference.....

Well most maternity jeggings are made from a denim-style material, but don't have the stitching details.

Yummy Mummy Tummy is the latest brand added to Everyday Maternity.

We met the founder of Yummy Mummy Tummy recently at the Baby Show and she was so enthusiastic about the product that we just had to add it to the site. Plus we saw lots of lovely pregnant ladies wandering around the show proudly holding their Yummy Mummy bags. So - we felt we didn't need any more persuading to take the brand on.

All the products are based around a 'stretch and recover' microfibre. I have to say I wear the maternity crop top pretty much every day - it is just soooo comfortable.

The concept with the belly band is that the microfibre stretches to your expanding bump, but is nice and thin so as not to add too much bulk under your clothes. There are no seams to itch or create a 'VPL' under your clothes. Wear it over your jeans to help hold them up, or as a gap filler between your non-maternity tops and your trousers.

Wear it when you are breastfeeding to cover your jelly-belly!

We have also got the Yummy Mummy Undies which have an element of lift and shape - to help you support your bot - but above all they are comfy, again with no seams or labels.

The Best Day Ever

So on Thursday we took another trip down to London on the train. This time instead of wearing our Cuddledry T-Shirts, we donned our glad rags and headed off for the Prima Baby and Pregnancy Awards.

We were nominated in two categories, Best Designer Maternity Range and Best Independent Maternity Retailer.

On arrival we quickly spruced ourselves, being in the company of other Maternity Fashionistas, we needed to look our best.

We nervously sipped our champagne before heading into the ceremony.

When they announced the results, you could have knocked me down with a birthing ball - we only went and won Best Independent Maternity Retailer! Our smiles lasted all night - shame we had to catch the train home - but probably a good job as the champagne was flowing a little too much!

We have gradually been doing a stock take at Everyday Maternity, doing it brand by brand.

So we thought we would write a little about each brand as we rediscover all our maternity and nursing clothes. Yesterday we did the Swedish brand Paola Maria who design feminine breastfeeding tops for style conscious women.

Paola Maria Breastfeeding Tops

The company was set up by Paola Maria Friberg in 2004 after her own pregnancy. Whilst breast-feeding she found it hard to find something that was soft, comfortable and pretty so designed a new style of nursing clothes for the modern mother.

At the time she was unable to find a fashionable breastfeeding top and this lead her to create her own design. She thought that the horizontal line under the bust with an overlapping and lower-part, was not specially made for the female figure.

And therefore, wanted to design her own model that would feel like a normal top without an under-part and also be flattering for the figure. This is where she came up with the cross-your heart design that is typical of the Paola Maria Nursing Top.

There are also an ethical company and have always been engaged in the environment and children’s rights. This engagement is coloring both the organization and choice of production partners, so much so they have decided to give 1% of turnover to UNICEF and with this we all help to look after children´s rights and hopefully help children in undeveloped countries.

All clothes from Paola Maria are produced in OEKO-Tex certificated fibres. All organic breastfeeding tops are produced and Organic GOTS certificated. Paola Maria only works with factories that keep the EU standard of employment and does not employ children.

Life as a new parent can be exhausting and emotionally challenging, as well as a joyous time.

So here is a scenario, baby is bathed and in bed, the first glass of wine is poured and you are ready for a chat and relax on the sofa - and a little love and support from Dad......

...thinking you deserve a back rub or foot massage you move in for a little pat on the back, and guess what.....he's just as tired as you, if not more tired.

Don't think you are alone in this scenario, talk to any new parent and you'll notice the same tired feeling.

Mum is at home keeping baby fed, watered and entertained and of course fitting a touch of home-making in between the demands of a new born.

Dad is at work, facing the demands a job that throws at him - also exhausted from broken nights. Dads feel their efforts are not appreciated and their partners are less than sympathetic because they are just as tired. It can become a competitive cycle.

To be fair, both sides have their point. Mum feels its dad's turn, as soon as he comes through the door, dad feels he needs to wind down after a long day.

Here are some tips on coping with the tiredness:

Stop - try and put yourself in your partner's shoes and at least listen to their point of view.

Mood - try and find a time when you are both in a reasonable mood - possibly the weekend when you've had a chance to wind down a little. Talk through the issues - is the problem sleepless nights, unfair division of chores etc. Try to be constructive - listening first, then come up with ideas between yourselves.

Be nice - kindness begets kindness. Do something nice for your partner to show you appreciate him - your kindness may inspire them to return the favour. Remember as much as we like to think our partners instinctively know what we want - it is often not the case. If you want him to run you a bath and make you a warm drink - tell him. We can't all be married to Derren Brown!

Look forward - plan a night off, or a weekend away - give yourself some light at the end of the tunnel. Our advice would be to avoid a beach holiday with a young baby - you'll probably spend all your time trying to avoid the sun and do we need to mention sandy nappies.......

Here is an idea that is totally simple, yet amazingly useful.

I used to work with Mark Moran, CEO of Hydrate for Health, many years ago. He recently contacted me with details of his new venture - asking if we would be interested in the product. I thought it was a brilliant product straight away, but asked a few other mums their thoughts.
Just to explain the product is a water bottle with drinking tube that can be clipped to a bed, chair or pram. Here are some of the reactions:

Michele - I always tell people to pack a straw in their hospital bag, to sip water with during labour, so this would have been brilliant.
Pat - Breastfeeding the twins was a handful, I would have a pint of water by the bed, but without a hand free to grab it I just used to get thirsty, the Hydrate would have been a good solution.
Jo - I wouldn't have thought to buy one, but I ended up having an emergency C-Section, which made it hard to reach for my glass. The ward was really warm, so I did get thirsty. I would have been handy to have one.

The Hydrant - is a personal, hands-free drinking system for people who are in bed or have restricted movement. The unique clip mechanism enables The Hydrant to attach easily to beds and chairs thus giving the user instant access to fluids without having to reach out.

It is can be invaluable for pregnant women during labour and afterwards in recovery where soreness makes it uncomfortable or difficult to move for a while. Those who have a C-Section or suffering with SPD will find the product very useful.

Once you are home with your baby, the drinking bottle can be attached to a nursing chair during breastfeeding, keeping you hydrated.

World Breastfeeding Week

World Breastfeeding Week, supported by UNICEF, WHO and FAO is celebrated every 1-7 August and over 120 countries around the world participate.

The World Alliance for Breastfeeding Action (WABA) was formed in 1991 to protect and promote breastfeeding. As part of its action plan a week dedicated to breastfeeding bring much needed attention to the subject.

So why is World Breastfeeding Week so important?

Each year a theme is chosen to focus the activity and bring people’s attention to a particularly important aspect of breastfeeding. This year the theme is - BREASTFEEDING, A VITAL EMERGENCY RESPONSE.

Naturally this is an important theme to promote in third world countries, but here is a story from a counsellor who assisted a woman when Hurricane Katrina hit New Orleans in 2005.

“A mother had been stuck on a rooftop with many family members and her two week old baby who was bottle fed. They had no access to safe water for five days. Her baby was immediately hospitalised when they arrived in Austin, but she died several days later.

The nutritionist of a relief organisation supplying food aid asked the mother if there was anything else she could help her with. The mother asked for help drying up her breastmilk as her breasts were still sore. The nutritionist asked the mother why she hadn’t breastfed her baby while she was stuck on the rooftop. But the mother had felt quite unable to do this. What amazes me is that no-one with the mother knew to have the mother put her baby to her breast. So many generations had not considered breastfeeding as a way to feed babies that the memory was lost. The baby was lost, also.”

Key Maternity Wear Essentials

If you are on a tight budget, perhaps consider the following items as you maternity wear 'must haves':

Maternity Jeans - you that you can dress your jeans up for nights out or dress them down for coffee with the girls. Maternity Jeans have different waistbands to accommodate your tummy, have a read of the Maternity Jeans Guide on Everyday Maternity's Fact Sheets.

Black Maternity Trousers - again these are a multi tasking item, used for the office, dressed up for a night out or just a change from your jeans. For information on maternity waistband styles read the Maternity Wear Tips section.

Maternity Wrap Dress - this dress suits most shapes and bumps, and can be very comfortable. Avoid non-maternity ones otherwise you could have more material at the back and the front sitting 4 inches above your knees. Don't underestimate how long it could take to loose the weight - its is not a race - so a wrap dress will see you right after baby arrives. Black is of course the staple, but we have some bright prints of you wish to make a statement.

Fitted Maternity T-Shirt - again opt for a maternity one, that will stretch and grow with you. Choose one in a neck-line that suit your shape and if you want to play it safe go for black and jazz it up with necklaces, brooches or scarves. Your boobs and back will grow, but your shoulders are unlikely to change, so buying larger regular clothes will make you look over-sized across your shoulders.

White Maternity Shirt - every season, without fail, the white shirt makes an appearance in the fashion pages. We've had pussy-bow, oriental collar, wrap around.....so with a white maternity shirt in your wardrobe you can always pull a smart outfit together either with your jeans or your black trousers. You can get away with a man's shirt here, and no doubt your partner will find it a sexy look, but for a more together look, opt for a stretch maternity version. So if you only buy 5 things items of maternity clothing this pregnancy, we suggest you consider these!

BPA in Baby Bottles

A chemical found in some babies’ bottles can be harmful to women, a recent study has shown.

Bisphenol A or BPA, which is a common component of a lot of plastics, can raise the risk of heart disease, such as heart arrhythmia, or complications to your heart rhythm.

The report was based on tests done on female mice and rats, and these tests showed that the chemical, bisphenol A causes the heart to beat out of rhythm. When this chemical was mixed with oestrogen, the heart began to beat even more out of rhythm, showing that women could be more at risk from this chemical.

This latest report is one of a long line of bad press for the controversial chemical that many believe is linked to early puberty, breast cancer, miscarriage and infertility.

With the recent outbreak of swine flu, you may be worried about it and the effects it can have on you and your unborn baby. We’ve put together a fact sheet with some links on where to get advice.

The Government’s own website has a special Swine Flu Prevention and Treatment section

It has been reported, that unlike normal flu strains that seem to strike the older population swine flu is more prevalent among the middle aged, so you should use precautions to avoid all illness when you’re pregnant.

Take note of the campaign catch-phrase:

CATCH IT. BIN IT. KILL IT.

This means covering your mouth and nose when coughing and sneezing, using a tissue. Throw the tissue away quickly and carefully, and wash your hands regularly with soap and water. Take extra precautions by cleaning hard surfaces (like door handles and remote controls) frequently with a normal cleaning product.

You should wash your hands and avoid sick people.

If you think that you’re sick, then take care of yourself. Put your feet up and rest and relax, and talk to your regular doctor as well as your midwife. They may recommend that you be treated with pregnancy class medications.

While you have your feet up take the chance to do some online maternity wear shopping – that way you will avoid the crowds!

5 Simple Tips for Massaging your Baby

Breastfeeding mums are given lots of advice when selecting a nursing bra. One piece of advice is not to wear an underwire nursing bra. Well read our Wearing an Underwire Nursing Bra Fact Sheet for more information to explain why it can be ok to wear an underwire breastfeeding bra. We have introduced an underwire nursing bra from Emma Jane Maternity, as we find that many women prefer the additional support.

The underwires used in this breastfeeding bra are made from titanium; a lighter metal than used in normal bras. These underwires will easily adjust to your changing body shape and will considerably reduce the risk of blocked milk ducts. The bra is made from tactel and is soft, yet supportive.

Each cup has a quick release clip mechanism, and the built in support ensures your breast remains supported while the cup is open. The straps and neckline have a delicate lace trim for a feminine touch.

The band size can be adjusted with 4 settings.

Maternity Hospital Bag

Packing your hospital bag is an exciting job for first time mums. If you're having your baby in hospital, have your bag packed in plenty of time (ideally by 37 weeks), so if labour starts early you'll be ready to go.

Here are some ideas from Everyday Maternity on what to prepare for your hospital bag.

Try not to take too much as you often only get a small cabinet by your bed. It can be useful to have two bags: one for labour and one for your hospital stay afterwards.

Labour Bag

* Your birth plan and maternity notes
* Socks and slippers – for wandering round in and keeping your feet warm
* Maternity nightdress - or old long t-shirt
* Dressing gown – to keep warm while you wait
* Prenatal Massage oil – for soothing back rubs
* Lip balm – gas and air can dry your lips
* Snacks and drinks – for you and also your birth partner, you don’t want them flagging!
* Watch with a second hand, to time contractions
* Camera
* Magazines, book or music player – not always needed, but just in case things take awhile
* TENS pain relief machine if you are planning to use one
* Prescription medications
* Water spray or a hand-held fan to keep you cool
* Small facial sponge, for dabbing and sucking on
* Drinking straws – easier than trying to drink from a cup
* Hair bands

Hospital Bag

For you…

* Nursing Nightdress – save your Nursing Pyjamas for when you get home, as the waistband of your PJs can be painful if you have had a C-Section
* Nursing bras - two or three
* Nursing pads to absorb leaks – disposable nursing pads or washable breast pads
* Lansinoh lanolin – for sore or cracked nipples
* Maternity pads/Night-time sanitary pads -- a couple of packs. Maternity pads are more breathable - normal pads have plastic backing which creates moisture and increases the risk of stitches not healing and infection
* Disposable panties – you may need to change your maternity pads frequently during the first few hours after the birth, so if you don’t want to use disposable pants, pack your old knickers
* Towel – dark colours are best
* Toiletries – toothbrush and paste, soap, shampoo, moisturiser
* Make-up – a touch of make-up will pep you up for your visitors
* Comfortable clothes for on the ward – loose and relaxed is best, you will still have your pregnancy tummy, and may well be sore. Take a look at the Maternity Leisure Wear section for some comfy clothes
* Breastfeeding Top – you may feel more comfortable with visitors arriving to wear normal clothes
* Feeding Pillow - helps bring baby to a comfortable feeding position
* Feminine Wipes – softer than toilet paper, as you may be sore and bruised
* Ear plugs and eye mask - in case you end up on a noisy, bright ward!
* Phone book, plus lots of change for the phone - you may not be able to use your mobile phone in the hospital building
* Biscuits and snacks
* Favourite tea bags
* Fruit juice/mineral water
* Pen & paper – jot down who has visited and what gifts they brought
* Change for the car park

For baby…

* 2 x Babygro and vests for baby – put at the top of the bag to ensure your partner can get at it
* Baby blanket
* Nappies/baby wipes/nappy sacks/nappy cream
* Hat and jacket
* Formula milk/steriliser – if not provided by the hospital
* Car seat
* Muslin squares – multi tasking item, mops up sick, keeps you clean while feeding.......

Check with your midwife for a full list as different hospitals will have their own requirements. Some will provide washable nappies during your stay and do not allow disposables to be used. Some prefer to provide formula milk themselves if you are not going to breastfeed.

Other Tips

Be wary of taking anything of value such as a cameras, camcorder or iPod as unfortunately items are stolen in hospitals should you be rushed off to theatre for an emergency C-Section you won’t be able to take anything in with you.

Let your partner know what is in each bag, just in-case you are in no state to remember.

Have some more baby clothes at home that your partner can bring in, should you be staying more than one night.

Stock up on basics, such as toilet paper, sanitary pads, nappies - you will only have eyes (time) for your baby when you get home, and won't want to be going out shopping.

About Breastfeeding

At Everyday Maternity we look for new products to enhance pregnant women's and breastfeeding mum's experiences. We have recently added Lansinoh products to our range. Breastfeeding is one of the greatest gifts you can give your baby. However, as when learning any new skill, support and information are often needed, and welcomed. Lansinoh's aim is to provide support and encouragement to breastfeeding mothers.

Here are some tips from Lansinoh to help.

Find a comfortable position

Proper positioning of both mother and baby and in particular the attachment of baby to the breast is important, as this can help prevent sore nipples and insufficient milk supply. Most mothers get comfortable by either sitting up or lying in bed, or sitting in an armchair, sofa or rocking chair. Many mothers find creating a flat lap helps in the early days, either by elevating the feet or sitting on a pillow. Some mothers raise their babies to breast height, others use the natural nurturing approach of holding their babies diagonally across their bodies. The most common breastfeeding positions are across the lap and with the baby’s feet out behind the mother.

Across lap-cradle hold – The baby’s head will rest in the crook of your elbow or on your forearm with her whole body facing you, and will be supported with the same arm beneath her back and your hand on the baby’s thigh or bottom.

Cross-cradle hold – The baby is supported at breast height by the opposite arm to the breast being offered. Your elbow is on the baby's bottom with your forearm along his back. Your palm is on his upper back, fingers and thumb either side of the neck. Your forefinger supports the base of his head under the ear.

Feet out behind - rugby hold or clutch position – The baby lies on his side between your side and flexed arm with his feet out behind you. The baby’s shoulders, neck and the base of his head are supported by your hand, allowing your opposite hand to hold the breast if needed.

Regardless of the position, make sure that the baby’s head and body are facing the breast, and help her to come onto the breast chin-first, aiming the nipple to the roof of her mouth when the mouth is open wide. Your baby needs to take a good part of the areola tissue (darker in colour) into her wide, gaping mouth in order to be properly latched on. Proper positioning (where the nipple goes deep into the baby’s mouth and so is protected at the back of the mouth) can ease the pain of sore nipples and help ensure your baby is getting the proper amount of milk.

Massage has many scientifically proven health benefits such as stimulating the blood and lymph systems, thereby increasing immunity and removal of toxins, stabilizing hormonal levels, and adding tone and flexibility to muscles, all of which enhance the health of both you and your baby.

As the baby develops in the womb, the mother’s centre of gravity gradually shifts. As the weight of baby and mother increases, added stress is placed on weight bearing joints. Hormonal changes during pregnancy can also cause joints to loosen, leading many women to experience discomfort, particularly in the pelvis and lower back. Massage increases flexibility, enhancing the ability to carry this extra weight whilst helping to alleviate aches and pains, leg cramps, muscle spasms and water retention.

Massage is also particularly beneficial in increasing circulation throughout pregnancy. Improved blood flow increases the supply of oxygenated blood and nutrients to the placenta. Winter Maternity Coats

The Regulations

The law says that all children up to 135cm tall, or under the age of 12, whichever is first, traveling in a vehicle must use the correct child restraint for their weight. There are very few exceptions to this.

Each year, about 30 children under the age of 11 are killed while traveling in cars and around 400 are seriously injured. The proper use of child car restraints would prevent many of these deaths and injuries.

In a 30 mph crash, an unrestrained child would be thrown forward with a force more than 30 times their body weight, injuring themselves and possibly others in the car. The safest way for children to travel in cars is to use a child seat that is suitable for their weight and size. A properly fitted child restraint keeps the child in their seat and reduces the likelihood of death or injury in a crash.

Nursery World have trained car seat fitters to ensure you can choose the correct car seat for both your child and your car. Below is a Guide to Choosing a Child Seat, but nothing replaces the one-to-one assistance the Nursery World team can offer at the store in Blackpool.

Choosing a Child Seat

The most important thing is to make sure that the seat you choose is suitable for your child and for your car. If you use the child seat in more than one car, if for example a partner or grand-parent also uses the car seat, you should check the fit for each vehicle.

Before you buy review the manufacturer's websites and brochures to help you gain an understanding of what is on offer.

Consider how you will use the seat. Answer the following questions:
• Will be constantly lifting it - a lighter weight seat might be preferable
• Will you be moving it in and out of the car - a base unit may be a good idea
• Do you do long journeys - a reclined seat or carry cot style may be better
• Will a child minder/grandparent use the car seat - isofit may be better to avoid confusion of belt routing

Choose a seat that is suitable for your child's weight and height.
• Babies need to be in rearward-facing infant carrier, and should stay in this for as long as possible. The maximum weight for most infant carriers is 8kg - but check the handbook for the car-seat to double check their weight limits.
• Once your child has reached the maximum weight for their rearward-facing seat or the top of their head is above the top of the seat, they can be moved into a forward-facing car seat.

Buying a Child Car Seat
Always try before you buy. Most retailers will not allow you to return a car seat that has left the shop. At Nursery World we will help you try the car seat. Pop in to see us - we have ample parking.

Do not buy a second-hand seat, you cannot be certain it hasn't been involved in an accident. The damage can be invisible and could have seriously weakened the protective properties of your seat. Second-hand seats are likely to be older and not designed to updated regulations. The instructions are often missing.

Breastfeed Babies get the Flavour

There are always many good reasons to breast feed your baby, but researchers at the University of Copenhagen have discovered that what a mum eats has an effect on the taste of her breast milk, which eventually influences what the child will prefer to eat when they start weaning.

An infant's first flavour experiences may be through the transfer of dietary flavour compounds into breast milk, say researchers.

The researches found that flavours passed into the milk and could could potentially be tasted by the baby. Stronger flavours such as liquorice lingered longer, whereas a flavour such as banana only lasted for around an hour.

The findings may explain why breastfeeding babies sometimes refuse the breast, as the flavour from mum maybe too strong........although of course there are many other reasons why they might not want to feed.

It may also mean that breast-feed babies are more likely to take to weaning, as they have become used to the differing flavours through their mothers breast milk. So come on mums, get baby used to their veggies early on, and fill up on your fruit and veg!!

A Pain in the Rib

A good friend experienced terrible rib pain towards the end of her pregnancy as her baby, the recently arrived Rhys, grew leaving himself less room to move.

His feet seemed to find their way between her ribs - which became uncomfortable, and wearing a bra was beyond her comfort threshold. And it only got worse as he became more active.

So she came to me to find a comfortable solution - which we found in the Arabella B seamless vest. She tried a sample we had in the office, and didn't take it off. The relief on her face was brilliant. The vest offered just enough support for her not to feel like a bra burning hippy, but enough freedom from the tightness around her rib cage.

The vests come in three colours - white, black and pink. And really do stretch and stretch!

Beyond a wonderfully comfy vest, some other things that may help are:

Sit up straight to give your baby more room
Use an exercise ball to sit on
Be patient....the baby will be ready to drop soon, when they move into your pelvis, you should feel more comfortable.

Is it me, or is it sad to be putting all the summer clothes in the sale already. It is only July!! And to be honest we really haven't had a summer yet. I don't know about you, but I can count on one hand how many times I have been able to sit out in the garden with my shorts on, so it doesn't seem right to be selling off our summer stock. It seems to be saying to the weather, you may as well stay cloudy and rainy, as we are getting ready for autumn.

Well we don't want to tempt the weather into Autumn just yet, so while we have put some of our bright summer items in the sale, we have some new items that we will bring out in August, to keep the collection fresh. Maternity Sleep Bra

A few posts ago we put down some of the items you need in preparation for breastfeeding, and one of them was a sleep bra.

We've added a great crop top from Anita Maternity to the range, which you may find useful as a sleep bra when breastfeeding.

The crop top is a good investment, as you can wear it through pregnancy, especially if your boobs do increase in size, and you feel you want some extra support to have a comfortable night's sleep.

This one is in a super stretchy material, so will grow with you, as your chest increases, so no need to keep buying more bras, each time your boobs have a growth spurt!!
